3D Film / BD is gonna change everything. I went to see UP at the cinema last night and all I can say is FUCKIN WOW ! The 3D is bloody amazing! Forget any preconceptions of it if you’ve yet to see it. It’s eye poppingly wondrous. Yes you get glasses and yes there are issues but compared to looking at some tits in the Sun with your specs with red n Green lenses, this is taking it to the next level and beyond. You must go see one of these new age films ASAP. There’s a few to choose from already and the list will only get longer… Bolt , Toy Story 3D, Monsters Vs Aliens, Ice Age 3:Dawn of the Dinosaurs, James Cameron's Avatar; Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Coraline and now UP.
2 small 3D niggles, the specs are a bit uncomfortable and very flat, this means if you sit in a row end seat, you’ll get the reflections of the little stud lights that iluminate the stairs, reflected in the back of em and also the light from the screen lights up your face at times and again reflects in the back of em….. 3 then, everyone looks like Buddy Holly
Amazing though the main feature was, the Pixar short that came before it was a better 3D experience, as was the trailer for the new Scrooge 3D, out at Christmas, that was just mind blowing. Simple things like the snow falling and it seeming like its in your lap. The Ghosts of Christmas literally in your face. Even the Disney Castle at the start of the film looks absolutely amazing as the camera pans around it and it floats just above the guys head sitting in front of you, the temptation to reach out and touch stuff is very real. If ever there was an experience that made you feel like you were 7 again , then this is it. I sat with my gob open so much , my missus kept elbowing me.
As for UP. I’ll give nothing away and keep it brief.
The story is just brilliant with Pixar tugging at every emotion and moral known to man, I’m tempted to think that kids under 12 would start to fidget as the first half hour sets the emotional scene about the old man Carl and his wife Ellie, but they would just be happy with the visuals.
The Humour is good although I was expecting more from what reviews I’d read. Dog lovers in particular will laugh a lot more than cat lovers like me.
The graphics are above what you’d expect from Pixar, the clothing textures in particular are fantastic, as are the characters animations and, well… character.
Its getting easier to take all this rendered CGI for granted these days, as we get more and more used to seeing this kind or technology. I found myself doing a little reality check at some points and reminding myself that it really was all done with computers. In a way I feel sorry for kids that have grown up with this kind of visual stimulus. They just think its normal and I doubt there would be many 7 year olds that would react like me and be full of wonder and awe.
For me the 3D stole the show and there were some inspired scenes that made good use of the new technology but also some missed oportunities. There was also a certain ellement of the plot and story that didn’t seem to fit IMO and I’ll leave it for you guys to see for yourselves.
These are pioneering days. Go see ASAP and feel 7 again
